Yesterday we started “officially” homeschooling, and as people replied with congratulations and well wishes to the cute pic of our oldest daughter holding her “welcome to 1st grade” sign, someone made a comment about how I must have endless energy. But the reality is – no, I actually don’t!
It’s typical of the replies we get when people see that we have 5 children, ages 5, 4, 3, 1, & 2mos. “Wow you have your hands full!” “I don’t know how you do it!” There seems to be an assumption that you have to be extraordinary to have a lot of children and educate them at home.
But in reality, I don’t have boundless energy or measureless patience. I get frustrated when my children act poorly, I cry when they make extra big messes, I get overwhelmed with all the work. I do a lot of apologizing, seeking forgiveness, and trying again.
What keeps me going? Well, God, of course! 2) a fierce determination to not hand over my children’s education to the state. 3) an unwavering belief that our children are blessings from the Lord and a desire to have a houseful of them. These overpower any feelings of incapability.
We don’t need to be superwoman, or have limitless energy, in order to successfully manage the upbringing of a lot of children. We just need to love God, and hate the evil forces that are trying to destroy our families more than we love an easy life. We can do this 🤍
